These three tools get lumped together, and picking the wrong one leaves you with something painful to maintain or a bill that creeps up every month. Here is the honest way to choose.
First, they are not really competitors. Zapier and n8n connect tools. When this happens, do that. OpenClaw is different. It runs an AI assistant inside your messaging apps that can hold a back and forth. So the first question is simple. Is this a conversation, or is it a trigger and an action?
If it is a conversation, like a customer asking questions on WhatsApp, that is OpenClaw.
If it is a trigger and an action, ask whether the logic is simple or complex. Simple, like a new lead creates a Slack message, is Zapier. It is the easiest and has the most connections, but the cost climbs as you add steps.
Complex, with branching and custom pieces, is n8n. It is cheaper, especially if you run it yourself, and it handles logic that would be painful in Zapier. The trade is a steeper learning curve.
Most growing teams end up with all three. A few quick Zapier connections, a couple of heavier n8n workflows, and OpenClaw for the team assistant. The whole stack often costs less than one mid tier SaaS subscription.
The most common mistake I see is paying over a hundred a month for Zapier when two of those workflows belong in n8n. An honest audit usually cuts automation spend by half while adding capability.
