If you use Claude or ChatGPT for work, you have probably pasted the same instructions and context fifty times this week. A Claude skill exists to end that.
A skill is a small file you upload to your Claude account that teaches Claude how to do a specific task the way you do it. Once it is installed, Claude uses it automatically when you ask for that kind of task. No copying long prompts. No reminding it what you said earlier.
Think of it as the difference between a temp who needs everything explained every morning and an employee who already knows your process, your products, and your voice.
It beats a long prompt because a prompt has to be pasted every time, and pieces get dropped. It beats the alternatives because the skill is a plain file you own. You can edit it, share it, and back it up wherever you keep your files. No lock in.
Skills make sense when four things are true. You do a task at least a few times a week. The task has consistent rules or voice. Inconsistent output costs you time or quality. And you already pay for Claude. Drafting emails in your brand voice, qualifying leads, summarizing meetings, and reviewing documents against a checklist are all good fits.
One honest reality check. A skill only matters if you actually use it. The best one in the world is worthless sitting in a folder. Build the two or three that match your most repeated tasks, install them, and use them daily.
The whole idea is simple. Stop re-pasting that long context every prompt. Put it in a file once.
